On September 11th this year, hundreds of thousands (some say over a million) Catalans joined hands to demonstrate to the world their desire for independence from Spain.
The Via Catalana initiative was based on the Baltic Chain that took place in Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia in 1989, as citizens of those countries sought an end to their dominance by the Soviet Union. British photographer Jacqui Barrowcliffe took part in the chain and has recorded what happened that day where she was, along with providing an explanation of what it was all about. Have a look at her photo story here, and see more of Jacqui's work on the backspaces web here.
Thanks to Jacqui for allowing us to publish her work.
