Catalan health minister Marina Geli has announced that there is a second serious case of swine flu in the region; the patient is a 52-year-old woman who is being treated at the Hospital de Bellvitge in L'Hospitalet (article in Catalan, Avui). Geli said that the women has pre-existing health problems, but that she did seem to be responding positively to the treatment she is receiving. The other serious case involves a man who is in a critical condition in hospital in Tarragona. Fourteen cases of swine flu have also been found amongst a group of university students who travelled to the Dominican Republic at the end of June.
The Catalan motorcyclist Dani Pedrosa yesterday won the US grand prix, coming from his starting fifth place to move in to first right from the off (article in Castilian, La Vanguardia). After over a year without a victory in the sport, Pedrosa overtook both Jorge Lorenzo, who had pole position, and the leader of this year's championship, Valentino Rossi; Rossi worked hard during the race to claim first position, but Pedrosa managed to hold on and ultimately beat Rossi by 0.344 seconds.
After the first five days of the summer sales, and with the shops open yesterday, this week has been the best for businesses so far this year (article in Castilian, El Periodico). With sales figures similar to those of last year, 3,000 shops, mainly chain stores, opened their doors for the first Sunday of the rebajas and the most popular items to be purchased so far are the traditionally popular clothing, shoes and accessories. However, shop owners are seeing that customers are being more cautious with their purchases and only really buying what they need rather than, as in past years, splurging out.
