Felix Millet went face to face with judge Juli Solaz on Friday, three months after the scandal broke out at the Palau de la Mùsica (article in Castilian, La Vanguardia). Alongside Jordi Montull, both parties had been summoned to testify after repeated requests from the prosecution team. The case against Millet, the ex-president of the venue was instigated on June 2nd and saw police search the emblematic building for evidence, wiretaps were also authorised. Millet has already acknowledged the appropriation of at least €3.3 million of the Palau de la Música's money in a confessional letter he sent to the judge in early September - in the letter he confesses to using the Palau's money to pay for work done on two houses as well as travel expenses for him and relatives. He also admitted the sale of a building owned by the Palau that wasn't authorised by the board. From this he pocketed an estimated €1.5 million.
A popular legislation that proposes to ban bullfighting is about to reach Parliament but the topic remains a hotly contested issue with animal rights groups wishing it to end but traditionalists claiming it is a form of art (article in Castilian, La Vanguardia). Some animal rights groups are hoping to impose a third solution where the fiesta continues but the animals aren't killed and the festivals do not use the final sword. The animal rights groups however, reject the Portuguese model as although the animal doesn't die in the plaza it does suffer through the uses of flags. The Asociación para la Defensa de los Derechos de los Animales (ADDA) argues that it is still a form of torture. "In Portugal, the bulls are not killed in the square. It is even worse than here because the animals are wounded. The animal suffers and remains in the square until Monday when the butcher arrives to kill him or finish him off" said Manuel Cases, president of Adda. Coming out in defense of the tradition is Luis Corrales, the director of the Plataforma para la Defensa de la Fiesta. Corrales justifies the current rules as they perfectly reflect "the battle of wits against nature" and he maintains that bullfighting is an art, he adds it "represents tragedy and is a struggle in which, ultimately there is a winner".
Anarchists protesting their support of prisoner Amadeu Casellas were expected to cause disruption to traffic this morning with protesters blocking the C-31, Ronda Litoral, Plaça de Cerdà and the N-2 (article in Castilian, El Periodico). Casellas began a hunger strike in late March which lasted 73 days in order to start negotiations with prison services about the possibility of his release. He wasn't granted this and in late June began another hunger strike which has been going on for over 100 days with Casellas now in hospital. He has currently been in prison for 23 years for robbing banks.
