A Barcelona judge is to make a ruling on whether a 16-year-old boy can undergo gender reassignment surgery; a positive decision would make it the first such intervention in Spain (article in Catalan, Avui). The teenager has spent the last 18 months following hormone and psychiatric treatment in preparation for the surgery, but the law as it stands here only allows such processes for people under 18 if they have a judicial authorisation. As such, the family of the boy made the application for the necessary permission and now await the decision. So-called sex change operations have taken place in Catalunya since December 2008, and 25 such procedures have been carried out; however, this is the first time that a minor has sought to undergo the process.
The city council of Barcelona has invested over €2 million in the gardens of the Teatre Grec in Montjuïc to recover the style and appearance they had in the Twenties (article in Castilian, El Periodico). It has taken nine months to complete the work and original plans and photographs were used to make sure that the garden, which covers almost 15,000 square metres, once again looks as it did when it was created for the International Exhibition of 1929. However, although the appearance of the garden is much as it was some 80 years ago, there are notable modern touches, including the use of energy-saving lights and a layer of plastic underneath the soil to help stop water evaporating.
A squatter (okupa) has been sentenced to three years in prison for punching an agent of the Catalan police force (Mossos d'Esquadra) (article in Castilian, La Vanguardia). The incident took place in May 2007 during a demonstration by a group of squatters in the centre of Barcelona; as the gathering had not been officially authorised, the Mossos deployed a significant number of agents to create a security cordon. The officer suffered a broken nose and was off work for 70 days. When sentencing, the judge noted that although images of the assault showed the police officer carrying a 'kubotán', an unregulated piece of equipment that has since been officially illegalised for the Mossos, this did not undermine his status, a suggestion which had been an argument of the defence lawyers.
