A team of scientists at the l'Institut de Recerca Biomèdica (IRB) de Barcelona have discovered a key to predicting how cells metastasise in the spread of colon cancer. The discovery will have significant effect on future treatment of patients with this type of cancer. In a related story, a study done at Barcelona's Hospital Clínic melanoma unit reveals a 50% increase in cases of skin cancer in the last decade. Melanoma is a highly aggressive, often fatal form of skin cancer, and is directly related to unprotected exposure to solar radiation (read both stories here).
