Perhaps you’ve seen one of these small yellow smart cars whiz past you. You may have even heard the booming voice of the in-car GPS talking to its passengers. But in case you haven’t and don't know what I'm talking about, Go Cars offer a fun alternative to the impersonal guided city tours of Barcelona. If you’re pressed for time, and want to discover the city, it’s the perfect way to get around. You won’t see the city if you're sitting on the Metro, and you’ll waste precious time waiting for the bus.
As soon as you put the keys in the ignition, you’ll be assured by the GPS as it guides you through various locations, throwing random facts at you, telling stories and even making jokes. Wherever you go and whatever you do, the joy is that you’re completely in control of the pace. You can stop for photos, stop for lunch or park up by a tourist destination.
Despite the company’s advice, under no circumstances must you ever “put down the map”. You’ll need it. Barcelona’s one-way systems are hard enough for locals, let alone tourists. So before you hop in the mini-car, you will have decided where you might like to visit in the city - whatever you do, don’t create your own route! From past experience, taking shortcuts and cheating the GPS will end badly. And you’ll rack up a high bill for the car rental if you’re lost somewhere in Barcelona for hours on end.
If you stick to the rules and follow the GPS, the rental cost is reasonable. You’ll have to put down a deposit, but provided you drive safely and don’t take any risks (such as attempting to drive on a motorway, or forgetting to put the handbrake on while parked on a hill), you shouldn’t have too many problems.
If you’re an adventurous spirit, and fancy taking this mini car for a spin, put your helmet on, and for goodness sake, remember to drive on the right-hand side!
