The relatively new Catalan Modernisme Museum on Carrer Balmes is the very definition of small but perfectly formed. Occupying the ground-floor and basement of an otherwise residential building, the museum houses an impressive selection of modernist interior decoration.
The ground floor is furniture items created by a broad spectrum of some well-known names, whilst downstairs houses a varied collection of paintings, sculptures and stained glass. The museum serves to re-enforce the idea of modernism as a movement concerned with the entirety of the interior of a building, down to its coat hooks and hat stands, which is particularly complimentary given the museum’s location in L’Eixample – where so many fine modernist building exteriors can be seen.
• There is extensive information on the different items on display that is provided in a wide variety of languages.
• The museum does very well to place the history of modernism and origins of it within the context of Barcelona’s history, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the movement.
• Given the not insignificant cost, this may be one for the real aficionados of the movement.
More info: entrance costs €10 for adults and €8 for concessions.
