The very look of Picnic is a breath of fresh air. Situated on a corner block that was once home to one of the less salubrious eateries of La Ribera, light streams though large, boxy windows, a scattering of tables occupy the terrace and a geometric bar zigzags across the space cleverly dividing it. I loved the mix of furniture—old schoolroom metal chairs with stripy cushion covers, flowers on the tables, high stools at the bar for drinks. It reminds me of the ‘hygge’ vibe of places in Copenhagen that manage to be bright, airy and minimal, yet relaxed, cosy and homey all at the same time, and that’s no mean feat let me tell you.

So all in all, it’s a very desirable place to sit down and eat, offering a good-value lunch menu of two (€10) or three (€12.50) courses, including a glass of wine. More notably, the food is a welcome break from the norm. I tucked into freshly grilled king prawn salad drizzled over with a kind of raita, mussels in a Thai style sauce that was OK—a little bland, if I’m honest—and could have done with a handful of fresh herbs on top, and a luscious almond ice-cream with a nozzle of orange flavoured mousse on the side. The trouble was I still felt hungry at the end, though to be fair, my pal who’d had the risotto said she’d filled up just right.

So I returned to eat á la carte that was likewise full of promise, this time brimming with big Southern States flavours. Properly crunchy and piquant crab cakes served with a fennel slaw and crème fraiche, juicy fried green tomatoes topped with nicely spicy Mexican corn salsa, and superb pulled pork sandwiches. It’s all great, just the sort of food this city has been crying out for, and would be reasonably priced too if the portions weren’t quite so skimpy.

I had brunch there recently and was quite impressed with the overall la carta menu. I really enjoyed the fried green tomato salad and the french toast. The only thing that was little off for me, was the pulled pork, my mom being from SC, where they specialized in pulled pork with low country bbq sauce..I was expecting a little bit of home. But all in all definitely a breath of fresh air for Barcelona.
