Close to the windmill in Avinguda Parallel, La Federica started to offer brunch not long ago, but it already feels as though they have being doing it for years.
When you enter, you’ll be amazed by the abundance of colours and particularly the large mural of Poble Sec. Looking around you’ll discover the peculiar objects they have been collecting to give the place an original retro-pop look, such as an old set of scales, the antique cash register, the lamps and their siphon collection.
Their brunch menu offers the choice of four different types of eggs: the classical Benedict and Florentine, made respectively with bacon and spinach, accompanied by a creamy hollandaise sauce; eggs Joselito are made with jamón, parmesan cheese and grilled tomatoes; whereas the Vikingos bring together salmon, cream cheese and tartar sauce. For those who don’t want to start the day with eggs, there is the salad of the day, different types of homemade yogurts or the 'toast delirium'.
Hot drinks, such as coffee, tea or Colacao are served in original cups and pots, reflecting the café's comfortable feel. For the healthy types amongst us, you can enjoy a smoothy of seasonal fruits for €4.50. In contrast, those of us who prefer their brunch with some alcohol, La Federica offers their 'wake-up calls' such as Apple Martini, Bloody Mary and Mimosa with blackberry for €4 each. Cava and homemade vermut are also available.
The portions are generous, but even if you are full, you must try their homemade cakes. My favourite one, and a classic on their menu, is the one made with kiwi and white chocolate served with cream, almond and marmalade. You could also try the chocolate fudge with toffee and the apple cake with walnuts, bourbon and cardamom. Just ask what they have on offer that day and be amazed.
La Federica has jumped directly to the top five of my favourite brunch venues in Barcelona! Not only because the quality and the taste of their food is delicious, but also because they care about presentation and the small details. Moreover, the service is extremely friendly and the prices are more than fair. Just wait until they bring you the bill and tell me this is not the cherry on top!
