If you’re looking for something a bit more special than the usual five-litre plastic squeezy bottles of supermarket olive oil, then try Oro Líquido. Tricked out with dramatic lighting and sleek, modern design, this oleoteca has the eponymous bottles of liquid gold presented like rare flasks of exotic perfume and immediately stands out amidst the cluttered antique stores on Carrer Palla.
Any shop near the cathedral is obviously going to have one eye on the tourists but Oro Líquido manages to keep its integrity too. Owners Ana Segovia and Patricia Elkhoury both come from families connected with the olive oil business and their glittering shelves represent all of the two dozen or so olive oil DO regions in Spain, along with several products from the Mediterranean basin including Italy, Morocco and Greece.
Catalunya is especially famed for its mild smooth tasting oils: try extra virgin Neus from Priorat made with arbequina olives, cold pressed the same night that they are gathered from the tree, or a blend of arbequina and verdiell olives from Les Garrigues.
There are also oils made from walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, lemons, oranges, lavishly presented black and white truffle oils from Italy and a good range of vinegars including 25-year-old balsamic vinegars and a 50-year-old Jerez vinegar aged in oak barrels.
The anti-oxidants and vitamins found in olive oil allegedly contain anti-ageing properties and Oro Líquido also offers olive oil shaving cream, lip balm, skin cream, soaps and other beauty products, all beautifully packaged.
To learn more about the products, contact Ana or Patricia for details of the regular tastings and conferences held in the basement of the shop.
