This year is the 10th anniversary of the Sala Montjuïc, the outdoor cinema that projects magnificently off the castle walls at the top of the mountain every year through half of July and August.
The impressive agenda this year mixes arthouse movies spanning French, Catalan, Spanish, Italian and American cinema with some more mainstream crowdpleasers like The King's Speech (2010) and golden oldies like Gentleman Prefer Blondes. There will also be live music and kids' activities, and for those who can’t face hauling a picnic up the hill in the heat, there’s a gin and tonic bar courtesy of Xix Bar (www.xixbar.com) and tapas by Bar Seco (barseco.blogspot.com).
While Xix will be serving its summer special, a deeply refreshing Mombasa Gin mixed with a nicely limey Schweppes Heritage Tonic (priced €5.50 a drink), Bar Seco will be doing their best to create different dishes to reflect the action on the big screen. They’ll serve arroz congri (Cuban rice with black beans) and fried yucca with mojo to go with the opening night’s film Chico y Rita, for example, a ‘Mac S’eco burger’ with Exit Through the Gift Shop and Bolivian arepas (South American corn bread patties) with También la Lluvia (priced €3.50-€5.50). Where possible, ingredients are organic or sourced locally.
