For a land that is so into its wine, there is a curious dearth of wine bars in Barcelona. Coctelerías, now they’re 10-a-penny, but wine bars are few and far between. With any luck, bar owners will soon start waking up to the fact that just as we’re eschewing dinner for the cheaper burger option, so many of us can’t afford €14+ on a strong, alcoholic drink. Rant over.

Fastvínic is the more casual, cheaper little sister of Monvínc; the latter being something of a powerhouse in wine drinking circles attracting the likes of Jancis Robinson for an evening of sophisticated, high-end wine tasting. There’s a library for serious aficionados and professionals, digitised wine menus and a slick restaurant at the back.

Fastvínic by contrast is more of a designer canteen—I found it a tiny bit soulless if the truth be told, though it looks great on the cover of a magazine—that sells fancy sandwiches and interesting wines by the glass. You pour them yourself from a vending machine—evidently all the rage these days; I just saw one at the unfortunately named Wineing in Palma too—after loading up a ‘credit card’ with cash on arrival. There are six whites and six reds to choose from, and like the mother ship, they change on a weekly basis. If you drink by the bottle, the range is wider, but generally more expensive.

Got to hand it to them: as a means of trying lots of different Spanish wines without bankrupting yourself doing it, these people are definitely onto something.

Long live the nuevo bar de vino!

Diputació 251 (Eixample Esquerra); Tel. 93 487 3241; open Mon-Sat 12 noon-midnight
