Tomorrow, Saturday 26th November, sees the Fira de Santa Llúcia start in front of Barcelona Cathedral. While the traditional Christmas market is popular with those looking for sustainable Christmas trees and locally-made decorations, many visitors also go along to see what shape the new caganers or shitters will take this year.
The figure who sits in the Catalan nativity scene (pessebre) in many homes here, squats down giving back to the earth what he has previously taken from it. While the traditional caganer was dressed as a Catalan farmer figure, in red hat (barretina) and simple clothes, in recent years, it has become the fashion to create shitters who are personalities that have made the news during the year, with the company caganer.com one of the main producers of these modern figurines.
This year, amongst those taking a starring role on the shelves of the market stall at the Santa Llucia fair, are Prince William and Princess Catherine, FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué and his girlfriend, the Colombian singer, Shakira, and newly-elected Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. You might also spot Mick Jagger, the Columbus tower from the bottom of the Rambla and favourites from recent years such as Barack Obama and Pope Benedict XVI.
The 2011 Fira de Santa Llúcia runs from November 26th to December 22nd.
