We're finally catching a break from the intense heat of the past weekend. Now that the heat wave has passed we can be thankful for today's 29ºC.
Great news! Tomorrow is fiesta and as ever, if taking the day off were an Olympic sport, Spain would have been further up on the medal table. It's Asunción de la Virgen and a jolly good excuse to do nothing. Back in December, it was announced that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had plans to move national holidays that fell mid-week to Mondays, including Asunción de la Virgen. But luckily for the working masses, tomorrow is still a day off.
It's your last chance to check out Brick Lance BCN's pop-up cinema as it closes today. Over the coming days the neighbourhoods of Gràcia, Sants and Sant Roc kick off their festa majors. These street parties, which are prepared months in advance, will be full of Catalan traditions, music and spectacles for people of all ages, not to mention the famous gegants! To download a programme of the festes de Gràcia (15th - 21st) a link is provided here.
In case you hadn't noticed (and I hadn't) Barcelona is the Mobile Telephone Capital of the world, a title the city will retain until 2018. As mentioned in previous blog posts, a mobile application exists to inform of jellyfish migration around nearby beaches, and another, yet to be completed, will help tourists and residents navigate the city by bicycle. However, it would appear that these are just two of the revolutionary changes to the way we use our phones now that the city has a reputation to maintain. Controlling city traffic, looking up the availability of Bicing bicycles, scanning in food items on virtual supermarket shelves and even alerting staff to suspicious behaviour on the FGC are all projects in the works. International companies are also choosing to set up shop in the Catalan capital and the entire enterprise is expected to generate €3.500 million. Suddenly, braving the crowds in Barcelona's new Apple store near Plaça Catalunya doesn't sound like a bad way to spend the afternoon.
Signing off, elbow pads and shin guards at the ready!
