Old shops losing the battle
Barcelona has already lost some 40 emblematic businesses this year and by the end of the year more will close their doors, unable to pay the rising rental prices. Businesses likely to close include El Indio and Musical Emporium.
Barcelona Meeting Point
On October 29th Barcelona will hold the 18th real estate trade fair, Barcelona Meeting Point. 265 companies will be taking part this year and the fair hopes to send of message of confidence regarding the sector's recuperation.
Sardana statue vandalised
The iconic sardana statue on Montjuïc has been badly damaged by vandals. Four of the eight dancers had their arms broken off.
160 voting points
There will be 160 places to vote on November 9th as residents in Catalunya are invited to say whether they are in favour of self-rule. Now longer a referendum as the Catalan government was unable to get any legal guarantees, the vote will be a 'consultation'.
Rethinking the Diagonal bike lane
The Ajuntament has finally agreed to re-design the bike lane on the newly-designed Diagonal. Residents and cycling groups had complained about the lack of safety. The new design will involve segregating the lane so that other vehicles can't enter it.
Ajuntament attempts to 'decentralise' tourism
In an effort to decongest the centre of Barcelona and encourage tourists to visit other parts of the city, the Ajuntament will spend 672,894 euros. It is developing apps and signposting and will invest in the Barcelona Inspires project, which gives information about all the city's neighbourhoods.
