Prince Felipe is crowned king
Prince Felipe was crowned king in a low-key ceremony in Congress, ending his father's 39-year rule. In his speech he talked about the need for “a renewed monarchy for new times" and "respect and protection" for all of Spain's languages and cultures.
Spain kicked out of World Cup
Spain won't go through to the next round in the World Cup after losing 2-0 to Chile in the first round. This follows its 5-1 loss to Holland.
El Prat is Europe's best airport
Barcelona's El Prat airport received the prize for Europe's best Airport, awarded by the European association of airport operators, the Airport Council International. It was praised particularly for its investment in infrastructure and and environmental sustainability. Over 32.5 million people travelled through El Prat in 2013.
Madrid by train for just €32
One million promotional tickets for the AVE from Barcelona to Madrid are up for grabs at just €32. The tickets will be available through RENFE until September 15th.
90% of evictions are from rented homes
90% of all evictions in Barcelona are now for rental properties. Whilst a lot of headway was made to reduce the number of bank evictions for people who couldn't keep up with mortgage payments, it seems that the problem has now passed to the rental sector.
The metro will be the venue for the Discovery Underground run which will take place on August 29th in the early hours. 300 participants will run the 10km between Universitat (Barcelona) and Gorg (Badalona). The race is part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the metro. The participants will be selected from those who apply online (see here).
