No action against the "party boats"
The management of the Olympic port have said that they won't take any action against the so-called "party boats" as they have no authority over what happens out at sea. At the centre of the polemic is Booze Cruise Barcelona, a company that offers all-you-can-drink parties aboard its boat as it cruises along the coast. The Ajuntament is looking at ways to limit these cruises, considered unsafe for the participants and undesirable by the authorities.
More prosperity for Barcelona
Economic indicators for 2013 for the Barcelona province were the most positive in the last five years. Among other things, they showed a small decrease in unemployment and an increase in exports and tourism.
Bread & Butter returns to Barcelona
Barcelona will once more host the Winter edition of the annual fashion fair after losing out to Berlin in 2009. The fair will be held at the Fira de Barcelona from January 8th-10th in 2015. The Summer edition will continue to take place in the German capital.
150,000 animals abandoned each year in Spain
Spain abandons more animals each year than any other European country. To combat the problem of people buying pets when they are ill-prepared for their upkeep, the government is looking to pass legislation that prohibits pet shops from exhibiting domestic animals in cages.
Airbnb fined €30,000
The Catalan government has fined US-based website Airbnb for illegally commercialising short-stay apartment rentals that are not listed on the Catalan Tourism Register. They claim that the website is unfair competition to the local hotel industry.
Megabus arrives in Barcelona
Budget UK transport group Stagecoach has brought its Megabus service to Barcelona. The bus will go from Barcelona to London via Toulouse and Paris. Ten percent of seats on each journey cost just one euro.
