Protests in Barceloneta
Over 1000 Barceloneta residents attended a protest yesterday against the behaviour of tourists in the barrio and the illegal renting of apartments to rowdy groups. Mayor, Xavier Trias, has committed to opening a new Guardia Urbana headquarters in Barceloneta as requested by residents. Meanwhile, the association of residents of the Raval, says that the root of problems in the Raval is not 'low-cost' tourists but the gentrification of the area.
Father of Catalan rumba dies
The founder of Catalan rumba, Pedro Pubill Calaf, known as Peret, has died at the age of 79. Yesterday, hundreds of people filed into the Ajuntament in Pl. Sant Jaume to pay their last respects to one of the city's best-loved musicians.
Bread & Butter cancelled
The much-celebrated return to Barcelona for the winter edition of the Bread & Butter fashion fair has been cancelled. According to founder, Karl-Heinz Mülle, industry pressure has forced the fair to remain in Berlin for the foreseeable future as most exhibitors are heavily involved with the German market.
Yesterday's Discovery Run saw 300 participants run 10km through the metro of Barcelona.The run took in 13 stations on Line 2 between Universitat and Gorg. Held to celebrate the metro's 90th anniversary celebrations, over 15,000 people applied to take part.
