Metro Line 9 will open in 2016
The stretch of Line 9 between El Prat airport and the Fira de Barcelona is due to open next February, according to declarations made yesterday by the Ajuntament.
100 euros a month for city's most vulnerable children
The Ajuntament has created a fund of 9.2 million euros for the city's most vulnerable children. The families of 7,500 children will be entitled to 100 euros per month for basic food and hygiene needs, and school materials.
More flexibility for tourist tax
The Ajuntament has asked the Generalitat for more flexibility regarding how the city's tourist tax is spent. The city's earns between €0.45 and €2.25 per night, per tourist (12.4 million euros per year) from this tax, which was introduced in 2012. Currently, the money collected must be spent on promoting the city and not, as the Ajuntamtent would like, on preserving key tourist sites.
The city revs up for the Mobile World Congress
Barcelona is getting prepared for the Mobile World Congress 2015, which will bring over 90,000 attendees and approximately 436 million euros to the Catalan capital. This year's congress, which will take place on March 2nd-5th, will count Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Google's Sundar Pichai among the speakers.
