Last Thursday the Ajuntament began installing six new urinals throughout the Ciutat Vella as part of new initiatives to manage the growing problems caused by mass tourism in the area. The urinals are to be placed in the areas most affected by public urination and are set to be open 24 hours a day.
The move has attracted criticism by those who argue that the urinal scheme, which is in its pilot phase, will be detrimental to local residents who will have to put up with the bad odours and the urinals' unsightly appearance. The CiU councillor in the area has argued that the installation of the urinals will do nothing to curb public urination, saying that people who engage in such practices do so not for lack of urinals, but for lack of manners.
The district councillor of the Ciutat Vella, Gala Pin, has responded saying she is "shocked" that the move has generated controversy, which she thinks is unnecessary.
