Every year, as part of Gràcia’s festa major, the barrio’s streets fiercely compete for the title of best decorated street. The neighbourhood is transformed according to elaborate themes (pirates, roman wrestling and under the sea, to name but a few) and creative adornments which attract visitors in their thousands.
Having won the contest eight times in the last eleven years, Carrer de Verdi has been the street to beat with its meticulously planned and beautifully executed decorations. Last year, they stole the show with a unique theme of all things Japanese, complete with a lanterns, giant dragons and masses of coloured streamers to replicate a Japanese garden. However, in a surprising turn of events this year, the Verdi has finally been knocked off the top spot by underdogs Carrer de Fraternitat de Baix with the theme La Mar Salada (the salty sea). Let’s see if they will be able to bounce back and reclaim the throne next year.
With an exciting programme of live music and entertainment, the festa major is on until Sunday 21st, and well worth a visit.
